Twitter continues to be one of the top social media platforms, with over 217 million users using the platform to keep up with current news and trends, to follow their favorite celebrities, or to just pass the time. Twitter can be a great platform to expand your business’ audience and promote your brand. However, a twitter account with zero followers is not going to be very helpful. Check out these six tips on how to organically gain followers on Twitter.

1. #UseHashtags

Hashtags are easily one of the most powerful tools on Twitter that can help you get more retweets, engagement, and followers. Now, you don’t have the space to throw 30 hashtags onto one tweet, but one to three per tweet tends to work well. Always add of mixture of both industry and trending hashtags, such as #SEO and #SundayScaries.

2. Tweet Frequently and Consistently

Unlike Instagram and Facebook, Twitter usually requires a much more aggressive and bold approach. Over 500 million tweets occur each day, so if you don’t post often enough, your account may get buried amongst the others. To keep yourself visible, you’ll need to post frequently and consistently each day. Businesses tend to tweet an average of 2-4 times per day, and some even go as far as 15-20 tweets daily. So, when it doubt, tweet it out.

3. Use Multimedia Content

97% of people focus on visuals on Twitter, so it is best to include some type of visual in your marketing strategy for the platform. Consumers’ eyes will be more drawn to tweets that have a visual aspect than tweets with only words. Don’t be afraid to use a variety of content, such as photos, videos, gifs, memes, infographics, and more to give your profile a pop of color and personality.

4. Engage and Engage Some More

The last thing you want is for your Twitter profile to look like it’s run by a robot. Just like other platforms, you want to build relationships with your followers and answer any questions or feedback they may have. The more you engage, the more relationships you’ll build with your target audience. Engage by…

  • Responding to comments
  • Responding to your brand mentions and tags
  • Retweeting
  • Liking and commenting on others’ posts
  • Etc.

5. Find and Follow Other Accounts Regularly

The general trend on twitter is that if you follow someone, they will most likely follow back. Find some accounts in your brand’s niche to follow and just wait to see if they follow back. You can also use Twitter’s “Who to Follow” feature, “Explore” tab, and hashtags to find popular feeds and accounts to follow. However, the work doesn’t end there. Be sure to take the time to like and comment on a few tweets on each account to show some engagement and build relationships.

6. Promote Yourself on Other Platforms

Promote your Twitter profile by going beyond Twitter. Include your Twitter handle in your Instagram and Facebook bios and include social buttons on your website. You can even post some of your popular Tweets on your Instagram page and encourage your audience to follow you on Twitter to see more.
