There has been much discussion and debate as to what leadership is and what leaders do. And yet, there is little consensus and definitions tend to be objective. But most of us can recognize good leadership when we see it. Good leaders possess shared qualities and traits that pave the way to success for themselves and those around them. Those qualities unsurprisingly translate into the world of social media and, when used effectively, provide the definition of successful leadership.

Curious? Those qualities are…

Honesty

Unsurprisingly, the number one thing we want from leadership is honesty. This means remaining transparent even when it isn’t glamorous. When you’re honest about problems or concerns, you demonstrate credibility. Honesty shows your public that you’re concerned with truthful evaluation and growth.

Inspiration

A good leader has a picture of where they want to go and a plan to get them and their team to that goal. While a mediocre leader may micromanage and fuss over insignificant details, a good leader shares their vision and allows their followers to not only share in the vision, but add to it. Similarly, in the realm of social media, a great post provides information, inspiration, and a call to action for readers.

Enthusiasm

It feels good working with someone who can look on the bright side rather than focusing on negativity. Enthusiastic leaders inspire and energize those around them. So take your cue from them and keep social media positive. Instead of reactively responding to online disasters, be proactive in highlighting successes and keep the conversation moving.

Confidence

Strong leaders know and appreciate their self worth and project self confidence to their teams. Having self confidence doesn’t mean being obnoxious or cocky – but rather speaking (or writing) in a tone that says “I know what I’m talking about”. Remember, when it comes to yourself and your brand, you are the expert!

No matter what industry or organization you work in, if you implement these leadership traits into your social media management, you will be on your way to engaging and inspiring your current and potential customers.
