Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and the various other social platforms that exist are typically one of the first places job seekers go to check out a company they are considering for their career. Although you may not be active or may see those channels as a place strictly to advertise and engage with clients, it’s important to recognize that they aren’t your only audience. If attracting top talent is on your agenda, your social presence should say it.

So, what’s your social presence like?

Active, engaging, and everywhere? That’s what I like to hear! Companies that have established a solid social presence are companies that will attract top tech/social savvy talent. The reason for this is that social media makes companies real. It shows real people, having real conversations, and real experiences. For a job seeker looking for an insight on the company culture, there’s really nothing better.

Not on social media? Then don’t expect to attract social and tech savvy talent. These platforms have become such a huge part of our lives, and they are not going away any time soon. If job seekers can’t find you on social media, it’s likely that they will think you’re either behind the curve or not a culture fit for them.

My advice? Get on Twitter. It’s the easiest starting point for getting social, and it’s a great platform for any type of business. Once you’re comfortable there, expand to other networks and start engaging. I’m not saying you need an active presence on every social network known to man, but a few would do nothing but help. If not, maybe my Grandpa will work for you… actually, on second thought, even he has a Facebook.

From the activeness, to the content you share and the conversations you have, your social says a lot job seekers. If you’re a company that shares custom content and knowledge, you’ll establish yourself as an industry expert. If you’re a company that shares photos of your team outings or funny office occurrences, you’ll establish yourself as having an awesome culture. If you’re a company that converses with it’s audience in a fun and appropriate manner, you’ll establish yourself as having top-notch customer service. If you’re a company that does all three, you’ll establish yourself as an opportunity that no job seeker would pass up.
