In case you missed it, Twitter caused quite a stir earlier this week when they removed user backgrounds from Twitter.com. Cover photos are still in tact, but the imagery users typically see on the side panels of Twitter.com are now a white/light blue color.
Why the change? No one knows for sure, although the background is still visible when you click on individual tweets (example). To confirm this, a Twitter spokesperson told Mashable “Background images are only available where logged-in users will see them publicly (Tweet pages, list pages and collections pages).”
Perhaps the company is ready to test sidebar advertising. Perhaps a whole new Twitter.com interface is going to debut in the near future.
